A Cross Between Cocaine and Methamphetemines: Bath Salts--The Deadly, New Legal Drug

There's a new drug in town

There is a new, deadly drug making its appearance in the states and they call it Bath Salts. It's called bath salts simply because it is a drug being sold disguised as bath salts, incense, potpourri or plant food, among a few other ordinary household products. In several unfortunate cases, it’s caused people to take their own lives. Individuals who would have otherwise never dreamed of hurting themselves have stabbed and shot themselves after taking in the chemicals in seemingly harmless bath salts, and those who have survived remain scarred for life, both physically and emotionally. Parents, please heed this warning. Since its being sold legally, our kids don't realize how harmful Bath Salts are. Please read this blog through the end. Watch the videos. From what I can tell, the product has been removed from Amazon, and although some gas stations and convenience stores are removing it from their shelves, there is still much to do.

What's it about?

The nightmare worsens because in most states, the drug is completely legal and can be purchased for as little as $20.00 for a small bag. Bath Salts come in appealing names like Ivory Snow, White Girl, White Rush, Purple Wave and Ivory Wave. Head down to your local head shop or gas station, and chances are you can get a bag. If not there, it is readily available on the internet. The drug is being described by many users as the closest thing they’ve come to a methamphetamine high, without actually using meth, and by others as a combination methamphetamine/cocaine high. It is manufactured with synthetic chemicals including Methylmethcathinone, Mephedrone or Methylenedioxypyrovalerone and each brand name carries its own specific blend.

What are the effects?

Users snort, smoke, inject, ingest and even insert the white powder into their rectum or vagina to obtain their high. Not only does it act as an extremely strong stimulant increasing the heart rate and causing chest pains, dizziness, panic attacks and nose bleeds, it can act as a powerful hallucinogenic and cause extreme paranoia, as well.  The entire buzz, including the hallucinations can last for up to three days.

What's being done to stop it?

No one is quite sure of the origin of Bath Salts, but beginning in early October 2010, Louisiana had the first handful of emergency room visits and calls to the Poison Control Center. From there, it has spread through several states. Louisiana has since passed a law making the drug illegal, but its users are simply crossing the border to Mississippi and purchasing it there. Idaho is the latest state of several considering a ban of the drug, joining Hawaii, Kentucky, Michigan, and North Dakota in their concerted endeavors to get a handle on this deadly drug. Georgia has also recently passed legislation to make Bath Salts illegal.

I heard about this "bath salt" issue on the news. I guess this is the latest in a long line of things that people smell, smoke, ingest, shoot, or somehow find a way to affect their brain. Sad.

I don't get how being wired for three days with hallucinations and suicidal thoughts could possibly be any fun!

Virtual Treasure, Wow! This is news to me as well. I actually thought this was going to be about an actual bath product... I pray others see this!

This is sad that someone feels so bad that they will do anything to supposedly feel good...This is dangerous! Thank you for sharing, Peace & Blessings!

I also thought what could be suicidal about bath salts? Used them for years. Hmm. Apparently there is no end to the stupidity of the human race and our never-ending need for thrills and/or distraction. Lynda

just regular bath salts? WOW! That's crazy!

kero 15 months ago

people shouldn't be shooting it up or putting it upn their asses. if you snort it, it lasts for 3 hours and you just speed. you don't hallucinate. if you inject it, yeah you will.

Don't you wonder who first came up with the bright idea of snorting something like this? Totally weird and freaky scary too.

Thank you for your comment N/A. It is important that people see comments like yours that are unfortunately true. If you ever come back here, I would like to have the chance to interview you about it and get more information from someone who has experienced this nightmare.

I just shared this hub with all my followers and tweeted it and stumbled upon it. This is serious and the word needs to get out. I work with psychiatric admissions and we admit people every day with severe psychiatric symptoms from these bath salts. I can't imagine why anyone would do this, but they do, and it's so dangerous. I feel so bad for the man in the video who lost his son like that. I was going to write a hub on this, but you have already done one, and an excellent one. Thanks Virtual Treasures.

thanks gail. this stuff is sold in convenient stores and gas stations; right next to synthetic marijuana. law enforcement is finally catching on. unfortunately, there are hubs on hubpages about how to make bath salts that probably should be removed.

Thank you so much! I am very honored! I truly believe we do have to get the word out. Amazon has finally quit selling it, but they are still selling the other herbs. If our kids see it as being legal, there is such a higher chance of them trying it. I need to update which states have illegalized it.

In Ohio, legislation was signed in July but won't go into effect until September. It's not just teens using this, but teens are at higher risk because they tend to use things that are cheap and easy to get. I'm glad Amazon has stopped, but did you see how many hubs have been written telling people how to make it?!

Virtual Treasures Hub Author 9 months ago

Yes. Which is extremely scary. It sounds like a lot of heroin users have turned to it because of the cost and convenience of purchasing it. Can you elaborate on some of the psychiatric symptoms? Is it just when they are using, or the effects that happen after? I've not read anything published yet on the after effects, and I think that is an EXTREMELY important aspect of its use.

Are you saying that the bath salts one buys in a department store are being used to get high? Or is it just that the drug pushers are labeling bags of drugs AS "bath salts" in order to disguise the contents?

Hang on.....I guess I should watch the video.

Brenda Durham profile image

Brenda Durham Level 5 Commenter 9 months ago

uh oh I tried to delete that comment, since the article says at the beginning that it's disguised as bath salts...

Sorry. Thanks for the informative hub!

Virtual Treasures profile image

Virtual Treasures Hub Author 9 months ago

I'm sorry. They are labeled bath salts, but they are made with specific chemicals that users are using to get high. The users know what they are buying, though, and it is truly being sold as a drug. I guess I could have been more clear, but its kind of confusing! Hopefully the video helps!

Here's an excerpt from our local paper. "Bath salts are crystallized chemicals that are snorted, swallowed, smoked or mixed with drinks or food. The chemicals can trigger the same effects as cocaine, meth or ecstasy, causing hallucinations, paranoia, rapid heart rates, violent behavior and suicidal thoughts."

A lot of people are going to the ER with hallucinations, panic symptoms, suicidal thoughts, violence, paranoia. Some are taken by police and EMTs because of aggressive and bizarre behavior, attempts to jump out of windows and off bridges, etc. I would imagine some are admitted to medical instead of psychiatric because of increased heart rate...maybe heart attacks. I'm not sure about that though.

kimh039 profile image

kimh039 Level 6 Commenter 9 months ago

oh. and it's believed that some of the effects will be permanent, like with huffing.

I watched the video. This is horrible! Is there no end to the wickedness of drug pushers? Guess they don't care who gets hurt or killed as long as they make money.

hello Kim! saw this on stumble...I wrote 2 articles about red bird/potpourri/cannabis...cant tell you how many negative comments it brought me/I shudder every time I see I have a comment on the articles! But I felt, like you, that word needs to be put out there especially to parents and to young people to think before they act!! way to go Kim!! barbara b

I ended up doing another hub on this topic, VT. It just keeps coming up. It's a little bit of different twist than yours. (Hi back to barbara b.)

Barbara 4 months ago

These bath salts... during their legal hey day... presented themselves at the local convenience store with ease and most people tend to somewhat trust something that is being overtly sold at the store. But this... this stuff will hurt you. I know this. it will hurt you really bad and tear you apart within weeks. I believe it is 5x more dangerous and addictive than meth. its so addictive some may end up needing to go on safe prescription amphetamines like adderall or else they simply wont be able to stop but thats not always an option for those without medical history of ADHD. YOU DON'T WANT TO PLAY AROUND WITH THIS. a couple weeks of using it and you will be scarred for a very long time after you stop.

It never ceases to amaze me how dumb people can truly be. Great hub.

how did I just buy some of this stuff down the road, I thought it was illegal, oh btw it is called a stain remover now.

Virtual Treasures profile image

Virtual Treasures Hub Author 3 months ago

Back again-you are absolutely right. It is illegal, but because the manufacturers keep changing the product it's found in, law enforcement can't keep up. As long as there are unscrupulous sellers, there will be buyers. It's a game where the manufacturers are the only winners.

I never imagined anything like this. Is "epsom salts" also used as a drug? Please let me know. I will write to the link you have provided above. Thanks for this alarming information. It's good to be up to date on this sort of thing. Voted up!

Virtual Treasures profile image

Virtual Treasures Hub Author 2 months ago

I haven't come across anything about epsom salts, but as another commenter suggested, the manufacturers of this crazy drug keep changing the product that the drug ingredient is packaged in. Even though it keeps getting outlawed, they just package it another way. It is so addictive and so destructive. It's amazing that people will push this stuff with no regard for the damage it is doing.

slol 2 weeks ago

This article is so fulk of bull, its funny. Salts do not get you high. Regular amounts are like drinking 2cups of coffee and having a prozac. Gives energy and makes u feel less down. It also stops alcohol cravings and suppresses hunger. Bans being oaid for by beer and diet comoanies. Wake up!

tim 4 days ago

continue to use them and have for years without psychotic breaks or heart palpitations. the suicides and mental breaks were from people who eother did not know their limits or most likely already had underlying mental issues.. come on people, its just like the "documentary" reefer madness that was "facts" about marijuana use.. useless and humoring

donnie 10 hours ago

just because its legal does not make it safe

just because its ilegal does not make it harmfull
